Am 2. Weihnachtstag 2004 ereignete sich der Tsunami in Südostasien, der sich im nächsten Jahr zum 10. Male jährt. Die Eindrücke sind bereits überlagert durch Fukushima und den Tsunami, der die japanische Katastrophe auslöste. Kleinere Tsunamis finden jedes Jahr statt, größere sind zu erwarten. In der Geschichte sind Tsunamis zahllos.
Die sogenannte Storega-Rutschung vor 8.000 Jahren war ein Mega-Tsunami. Damals entstand daraus die Nordsee. Die Verbindungen zwischen England und dem Kontinent wurden unterbrochen. Die Erdbeben vor Kreta im Jahre 365 n.Chr., der Untergang Lissabons 1755 und der Ausbruch des Krakatau 1883 waren jeweils durch Tsunamis begleitet. Auslöser können Erdbeben, unterseeische Hangrutschungen, aber auch Vulkanausbrüche und der Impakt durch einen Meteoriten sein. Die Skala der katastrophalen Folgen ist nach oben offen.
